This week, the San Luis Obispo County Bicycle Coalition is launching the Connect SLO County initiative, with the goal of completing the three main bike path projects in San Luis Obispo County. The projects include the Bob Jones, De Anza, and North Coast paths All have been in plans for decades, and now is the time to complete them.
Residents of SLO County want more Bob Jones trails, the Bicycle Coalition and local leaders agree with them, "The Bob Jones Trail has been a great success and has incredible potential. I'm excited that the Bicycle Coalition is working hard to complete that and other bike path projects countywide," says Supervisor Bruce Gibson. Connect SLO County aims to build a bicycle network where everyone, ages eight to eighty, can safely shop, commute, and play by bicycle. With increasing bicycle ridership, rising gas prices, and a growing interest in getting out of our cars, the Connect SLO County initiative could not come at a better time. Safety is at the core of the initiative, by promoting safe spaces for bicycle riders to enjoy the beauty that San Luis Obispo County has to offer.
Bicycle safety has become a hot topic of conversation both locally and nationally, with a tragic death of a bicycle rider riding legally in Santa Maria, Rideshare's Bike Month in full swing, and a growing demand for more bicycle facilities from riders of all types. The Bicycle Coalition is stepping up to the plate and creating a discussion regarding safety, facilities and riders. Executive Director Dan Rivoire is committed to the initiative, "Completing our bike paths is a goal we can all agree on. We want to give residents and visitors better access to the beautiful landscapes our county has to offer." With the Connect SLO County initiative, the Bicycle Coalition will be providing bicycle riders of all types access to the most up-to-date information regarding the planned bicycle paths, as well as safety information for all road users.
"We know these bike paths are good for SLO County. They're good for our residents, our visitors, and our local economy. Connect SLO County will create a positive impact on the future of these paths for decades to come," says Rivoire. Connect SLO County will amplify local support for these projects, letting our local officials know how important they are for the future of transportation on the Central Coast.
