Wood Chip Giveaway
updated: Mar 08, 2017, 9:24 AM

Source: City of San Luis Obispo

The community is urged to bring cans, buckets, bags and other containers to the San Luis Obispo Corporation Yard (25 Prado Rd.) Saturday, March 11, where City staff will offer free wood chips. The wood chips not only help beautify landscapes, but they also help to hold in moisture, making landscaping more water efficient.

Staff will be on hand with a loader for those who bring a truck or trailer to the giveaway, which will occur between 8 a.m. and noon.

The event is part of the Closed Loop System, a green waste recycling program that has been operated for roughly ten years by the City's Urban Forest Services division. Under the Closed Loop System, all the green waste the Urban Forest Services Division produces from pruning, emergencies or storm damaged trees is used for some other purpose.

"The City uses the recycled green waste in its own landscaped and natural areas in a variety of ways, helping to fulfill the City's goals to be both green and water efficient," said Ron Combs, the City's arborist. Currently the City uses the chips to keep the sun and wind from drying out and improving soil, percolation of water into the ground, reduce storm water runoff and suppress weeds. If there is an over-abundance of wood chips, the City offers a giveaway to the public.

Currently, local soil is moist from the winter rains, which makes this a good time to spread 3- to 4-inch layers of mulch in beds and landscaped areas. That mulch will help hold the moisture in by reducing the drying effects of the sun and wind. Chips should not cover the trunks of shrubs and trees, which will cause crown rot.
