Close call Second Alarm Structure Fire in San Luis Obispo
San Luis Obispo City Fire Department personnel responded to a reported structure fire at 4353 Vachell
Lane in the City of San Luis Obispo at 9:13 earlier this evening. The first arriving SLO City Fire
Department unit found a rapidly spreading fire involving a 2,000 square foot four bedroom single-story
residence, an attached 600 square foot garage, a storage shed, and 2 vehicles.
The garage, shed, and vehicles were fully involved, and the residence was 50% involved according to the
initial condition report. A SLO County Sheriff deputy on patrol in the area arrived just prior to the fire
units and was able to successfully evacuate the 5 occupants from the involved residence and 4
occupants from a nearby threatened home.
The fire was quickly and aggressively attacked on all four sides and three of the four bedrooms were
spared significant fire damage. The nearby residence was also protected from any fire damage by timely
deployment of multiple hose lines. Control was achieved within 25 minutes of the initial 9-1-1 call.
The City responded a battalion chief, a ladder truck, and three fire engines. Cal Fire also responded two
engines, a battalion chief, a water tender, and a breathing support/lighting unit as part of the mutual
and automatic aid agreements. Two chief officers and fire investigators were also requested and
responded.
Operations utilized to control the incident were defensive fire attack, interior search, exposure
protection, shut down of the power utilities, and salvage of valuables from the bedrooms that were
protected from fire damage. The American Red Cross also responded and is providing temporary
housing and assistance to the displaced occupants.
No injuries occurred to the occupants or firefighters. The property loss/damage to the structures,
vehicles, and contents is estimated at over $350,000. According to Fire Investigator Dennis Byrnes the
fire started in the garage. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The residence did not have
working smoke detectors according to the occupants.
The public is reminded to ensure their place or residence or employment has working smoke detectors
present.
