Super Bowl Sunday DUI Checks

NO ONE WINS WHEN IT COMES TO DUI
The Super Bowl is one of America's most-anticipated and watched
sporting events of the year, an opportunity for family, friends, and fans to gather together and
root for their team. However, the celebration can quickly turn to tragedy when partygoers
exercise poor judgment and fail to designate a non-drinking driver.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) joins with the U.S. Department of Transportation,
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the National Football League and TEAM
(Techniques for Effective Alcohol Management) to spread an important safety message to the
public about designating a sober driver on Super Bowl Sunday - Fans Don't Let Fans Drive
Drunk.
"Make the responsible decision to designate a driver who can provide a safe ride home, someone
who is abstaining from drinking that day," said CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow. "Impaired
drivers destroy thousands of lives every year by simply getting behind the wheel of a vehicle."
According to the CHP's Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System, alcohol was involved in
nearly 25 percent of collisions on Super Bowl Sunday 2010 (the most recent year that finalized
collision data is available). Those 211 alcohol-involved collisions resulted in the death of six
people and injuries to 124 others throughout California.
The CHP will work with law enforcement agencies throughout the state to discourage the public
from driving under the influence (DUI), and to try to remove those drivers who are impaired
before they injure or kill themselves or others. On average, the past three years (2010-2012), the
CHP has made nearly 450 DUI arrests on Super Bowl Sunday throughout the state.
The public is also encouraged to be a team player by calling 911 if they suspect a drunk driver.
Callers should be prepared to provide the vehicle's description, license plate number, location
and direction of travel.

581 - it's a great time to enjoy anything because no one is out - they're all plastered in front of the TV watching the game. It's this Sunday BTW. It's a fun time. Half my company is taking next Monday off to recover from SBS (Super Bowl Syndrome) so there will be a place for me to park - yay.

I'd love to see an Edhat poll that measured how many Edhatters really care about the Super Bowl (or professional team sports in general). I'd guess less than 15%.

It's a myth that no one is out during Super Bowl, even more so in Santa Barbara where even more people could care less about it. On a nice sunny Superbowl Sunday you see at least as many if not more people out enjoying our local trails and outdoor spaces. Sames goes for skiing or surfing on Superbowl, just as crowded.

Also remember not to drive without a license. They seem to nab three times as many non licensed drivers as they do drivers under the influence during these sting operations.

Next to New Years Eve, Super Bowl is a sportsbars' biggest payday. They don't seem to care about people, just sell as much booze as possible.

Geez, CHP could just patrol for the 30 minutes after the game ends and catch 90% of the drunks heading home from the bar or their buddy's house. For those Edhat demographers, consider this 40 year old Goleta native and his family as one of those that will be watching the game this year.

How'd you like to be the CHP officer that has to work on Sunday? I guess the overtime is worth it, and maybe they can stream the game to their laptops in their patrol cars. I wish the networks would stream their games like ESPN has done, then I could watch it in my cableless and satelliteless world.

"Those 211 alcohol-involved collisions resulted in the death of six people and injuries to 124 others throughout California." If these statistics read, 211 gun-related incidents resulted in the death of six people and injuries to 124 others throughout California, man would there be an outcry. As it is it's only alcohol and cars....ho-hum...!

What's the great attraction between major spectators sports events, and hordes of drunken, moronic imbeciles? This is not just a US thing - it happens all over the world. Spectator sports have a crowd response characteristic that is a parallel of the 1930s Nuremberg Rallies, the US mega churches, stadium rock concerts, or Roman Gladiator events ... thousands of people, easily led by the nose, in one place at the same time, responding en masse to vapid celebrities or charismatic manipulators. Add alcohol, and its a sure recipe for mass idiocy.... or worse.
