Admittedly a dumb mistake, but it's also Buellton..

Seriously, unlocked and keys inside! Even after living in middle of no where Montana for a few years, YOU DON'T leave your car unlocked with the keys inside.

While I don't understand people locking and arming their vehicles to go step inside a gas station or even to make a quick purchase at the 7-11, this seems to go the other way. Could be just dumb (bad) luck, hopefully, and not force of habit.

Why should I be afraid someone is going to steal my truck? Shouldn't I believe that people are going to do the right thing? It's much easier to live that way.

I've left the keys in my crappy car hoping someone would steal it, but to no avail.. maybe I'll try this in Buellton.

980 - You need only have a lowlife assailant come out of the shadows and jump into your unlocked car while in the 7-11 only for a minute. Happened to my husband's cousin several years ago.

Now we always lock, even for a few moments.

UTOPIA - No need to lock, no one wishes me harm.

REAL WORLD - Lock up always! Sad, but wise advice.

I know a ton of people that leave keys in their vehicle in SY. It's more common than you think. Never heard of anyone doing it in SB though.

I'm curious - can anyone who regularly leaves vehicle 1)unlocked or 2) unlocked with keys inside please tell me why you do it?

Don't you think unsavory characters can case your neighborhood in the middle of the night - even if you think the area is completely safe?

NICE truck... too bad she didn't care about it enough to keep it safe from da bad guys! My car is 15 years old, but I like it a lot and ALWAYS lock up, even to go pay at the gas station! And it's easy to do, since nowadays most cars have "clickers" - a simple push of one button as you leave and as you return.

Wow, Beautiful truck. Only one year old and it cost around $50,000 new. Does the insurance company have to pay for this lack of care?

995.... a lowlife assailant can jump out of the bushes and into your car just as you're getting back in it - force you into the passenger seat and take you out. My life is worth more than my car.

With so many alarms going off randomly it's hard to imagine anyone taking them seriously.

@SBSURFERLIFE...maybe you've been chooming too much, I have no idea where you get BUELLTON from...

(From TFA)
>The vehicle was taken from Santa Ynez on 12/10/2012...
> ...3400 block of Manzana Road in Santa Ynez.

FFS, they said SANTA YNEZ not once but TWICE!

You people say "Buellton" like it's a slur. Whatever. We have a higher median income than Santa Barbara [source: wikipedia].

This vehicle will be recovered in San Bernardino or Riverside..... a respected patron at the casino may have borrowed it for a stroll south.

I can understand leaving it while taking groceries in. After all, it was in the driveway and we don't know how long it was unattended.

May I make a suggestion for all of you off-topic posters?
You might be very helpful if you carefully note the subject truck's color and style and just keep it in mind as a chance for you to be a helpful good citizen.

Note that the license plates may have been removed and may be replaced with a dealer-advertising paper or plastic or with other license plates. Thus, if you see the truck or one like it, it might be an opportunity for you to contribute to society by noting where and when and what plate(s) and any other details and simply reporting it as a possible find. 911 is a common good and if it were your truck that were taken, you would be grateful for the help.

Rather than cluttering Edhat with personal comments, consider someone lost their vehicle to theft and try being helpful. Obviously, there are many options as to who took it and where it may be. I believe the best is a joyrider who saw an opportunity there in Santa Ynez -- an out-of-the-way spot and unlikely for a professional thief. Of course, it is a valuable vehicle and may be aboard ship to a foreign destination by now, but look for the truck abandoned somewhere as I believe police say the odds are 5 to 1 it is a joyride.

Happy Holidays Everyone. :-)
