WHAT: Arrest for Battery - Transient male acts out toward 9 year old victim
WHERE: Broad St. at South St., San Luis Obispo
WHEN: Wednesday, November 21, 2012, at approximately 1:15 p.m.
ARRESTED: Jaime HERNANDEZ; age 44; transient in San Luis Obispo.
At the above date and time a San Luis Obispo woman and her two children, ages 6 and 9,
were preparing to cross the street at the intersection of Broad and South.
The 9 year old girl, who was wearing rollerblades, was standing behind her mother waiting to cross Broad St when a transient male, later identified as Jaime HERNANDEZ, crossed South St and approached the girl from behind.
As he passed behind the family he grabbed the 9 year old girl's belt loop and pulled her as he continued to walk past the family, and reportedly glaring at the girl. This caused the girl to spin around slightly, but she was able to maintain her balance, pull away, and leave the curb with her family to cross the street.
As they crossed the street she alerted her mother to what happened and they immediately went to Fire Station 1 (located on the corner of Broad and South) to notify police.
Officers responded and obtained the description of the man. They immediately recognized
the description of the man to match that of a transient male, Jaime HERNANDEZ, whom
they had contacted earlier in the day during a park patrol.
Officers searched the area and quickly located HERNANDEZ with the assistance of another citizen. HERNANDEZ was positively identified as the suspect who grabbed the girl's belt and was placed under private person's arrest for Battery - 242PC.
There is nothing to suggest that this crime was sexual in nature, and at this time we have no other reports of such behavior.
HERNANDEZ was booked at San Luis Obispo County Jail on the above charge, and is
being held without bail for a parole violation. HERNANDEZ is on parole for 242PC -
Battery.
